Hair Romance - BTS as a judge for Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair with Schwarzkopf

Sitting in a judging panel is much more stressful than I thought it would be. I now watch shows like X Factor and So You Think You Can Dance with a lot more respect for my fellow judges.

In August, I was invited to be on the panel of the Schwarzkopf Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair Competition. Alongside me was Grant Withnell, Schwarzkopf National Technical Educator, Debbie Selikman, Editor of Beauty Heaven, and Jodie Lynch, Schwarzkopf Marketing Manager.

Our task: to decide who, out of the amazing 1,347 entrants would be declared Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair.

It was very difficult to narrow the field down to the finalists, even with the help of the 104,862 votes that flooded the Facebook polls. With so many beautiful girls to choose from and all with such great hair, it made our job very challenging.

The other problem was there were so many different types of hair to choose from. I love celebrating the differences you can find in all the hair types you can find and our final selection really represented that.

In the end, for me it came down to two elements: the quality of hair and how well it was looked after, and versatility of style.

Maintenance of your hair is as important as how you style it. For our finalists, I was looking for the one with the hair that was in the best condition, not necessarily the longest hair. As it turned out, the winner didn’t have the longest locks, but it was clear there was great care taken of her hair and no split ends.

There are many ways to keep your hair looking its best. Obviously taking care not to heat style it too much is one, but another is not resisting a trim. Although having long hair is a hair dream for many of us, if you don’t have a regular snip, split ends can form and travel the fill length of your hair strands. This will leave your hair brittle, difficult to style and faded.

Products can help with your hairs’ health. For example switch up your regular conditioner to a deep treatment mask, like the Schwarzkopf Deep Nutrition Intensive Care Mask, to hydrate and restore your hair. For coloured hair, leave in conditioners like the Colour Protect Express Repair Leave-In Conditioner continue to nourish your hair throughout the day.

For versatility, we were looking for hair that would look good in a multitude of styles. This element not only relied on excellent hair quality but also the type of cut in the hair. For your hair to be truly versatile, length isn’t necessarily the be-all and end-all. Long layers or face framing layers will allow you to put more texture in up dos and give you more scope when styling your fringe.

Finding new ways to style your hair is often just a case of playing around with it to see what it can do. Of course, there are many places you can find style inspiration. Start with my  30 Hairstyles in 30 Days ebook [link -] - but then I would say that!

Our four runners up all had incredible hair and I love how different they all were. Of the 25 finalists these four were total standout. Annabel Spilane, Johana Mislov, Miranda Halma and Sarah Zeidel will each receive a year’s supply of Schwarzkopf products.

It was a unanimous decision when choosing our winner.

Natasha Roberts, the winner of the Schwarzkopf Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair Competition has stunning blonde hair that was beautifully styled and maintained.

Natasha Roberts will feature in a four page shoot in both Shop Til You Drop and Cosmopolitan magazines.

Here’s a sneak peek behind the scenes from the shoot this week!

I’ll be creating tutorials for each of the looks so you can recreate Natasha’s styles in your hair too.

  • Hair Romance - New York Minute Hairstyles

New York is one of my favourite cities in the world. It makes you feel like anything is possible. It has everything here.

The trade-off is time – no one here has enough of it. Even so, New Yorkers still find time to look good. And it’s not impossible. My advice – as you would expect – is to work from the top down.

New York women are impossibly stylish. Their hair is perfectly polished and sleek whether they’re wearing it up or down. They know the tricks and simplicity is definitely one of them.

Here are my 5 slick simple tricks to get NYC-perfect hair:

Get a blowdry (or blowout as they say in the US)

You could spend an hour trying to give yourself a professional blowdry, or you could pop into one of the many concept salons that just offer blowouts. They open at 7am so you can stop by before work! Many regular salons also have special price blowdries. It only takes a minute to make an appointment! My tip, book a junior stylist or go early in the week to save money.

Make your blowdry last as long as possible

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce the frizz that can build up on cotton pillowcases overnight. Twist your hair up into a loose top knot, or clip it up on top of your head so that you don’t mess it up during the night. In the morning, let your hair down and lightly brush with a boar bristle brush. Then sprinkle a little Schwarzkopf Styling Powder at the roots for lift and volume and you’re fresh and ready for another good hair day.

    Polish up your ponytail

Everyone works hard and plays hard in NYC. You don’t have time to do elaborate hairstyles. The easiest one-minute hairstyle is the ponytail. It’s incredible popular but your average ponytail won’t cut it here. You have to step it up a notch. Wear it high on your crown for a sporty, youthful look or wear it low for a more elegant style. Use a heat protectant, like Schwarzkopf’s Heat Protect Spray and run your straightening irons through your ponytail for a sleek finish. Accessorise with a metal hair cuff, or wrap a piece of hair around your ponytail to hide your hair elastic. A spritz of Schwarzkopf Ultimate Keratin hairspray will smooth any flyways and give you that sleek city ponytail.

    Perfect post workout hair

It seems everyone in NYC works out. I guess it’s the only way to stay slim with so much good food around! Go straight from the gym to the bar with this easy one minute hairstyle. The sleek top knot is actually easier to do when your hair is wet or a little sweaty after the gym. Use a fine comb or brush to smooth your hair into a high ponytail. Use a hair donut or just twist your hair around to form a bun and pin in place. Spritz with Schwarzkopf Super Styling Lacquer for a flawless finish. This is definitely the go-to hairstyle that I’ve seen on the streets of NYC.

    One minute weekend hair

Your hair has had it by the weekend. Give your hair a rest from styling at least one day a week. New York women know they need to look after their hair to keep it looking healthy. A deep conditioning treatment is the secret. I love the Schwarzkopf Ultimate Oil Elixir Hair Structure Renewal Treatment as it works in just one minute. You can use it in place of conditioner a couple of times a week. Then let your hair air dry and relax before you start the hairstyling cycle again on Monday morning.

If you should find yourself in New York, and you’re trying to decide what hairstyle you should wear, just ask yourself, what would Olivia Palermo do? She’s the Upper East Side queen and always looks perfectly polished.

  • Hair Romance’s daily steps for beautiful hair

They used to say the secret to beautiful hair was to brush your hair 100 times every day. Then I read supermodel and hair goddess, Giselle, doesn’t even own a hairbrush.

I’ve heard tales of using honey, eggs and beer on your hair but I don’t really have time for all of that in my every day hair care routine.

I mean, how long would it take to wash honey out of your hair? And you have to wash the egg out in cold water or you’d end up with scrambled egg hair! I don’t want to smell like a brewery either, so here are my easy daily steps to achieving beautiful hair.

Hair Romance’s daily steps for beautiful hair

Wash your hair – Now I don’t wash my hair every day, but choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair is key to achieving beautiful hair. Focus on your biggest hair concern and choose a product formulated to help. My hair goes through a lot of styling and I love the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Oil Elixir range. It contains liquid keratin to nourish my overstressed hair.

Rinse before and after shampoo – This may sound obvious, but make sure your hair is completely saturated before applying shampoo. If your hair is dry it won’t lather and you’ll end up using more product than you need. It’s important to rinse your hair thoroughly afterwards too so your hair is ready for conditioner.

Massage your scalp – when I shampoo my hair, I treat myself to a little head massage too. It’s not as good as when someone else does it at the salon but it still feels great. More importantly, it stimulates blood flow to your hair follicles which helps promote new hair growth.

Always treat your hair – As I colour my hair and it’s naturally dry and curly, my hair is always in need of a treat. I use a treatment in between my shampoo and conditioner every time I wash to give my hair that extra boost. I love the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Oil Elixir Hair Restructure Renewal Treatment as it’s so nourishing on dry hair. It makes my hair feel like new again. Plus it only needs 60 seconds on your hair so it fits in my busy routine.

Condition your ends – After rinsing the treatment off I still apply conditioner to the ends of my hair. There’s no need to apply it to your scalp, focus on the ends of your hair that need that moisture the most.

Comb wet hair gently – With curly hair, the best time to detangle your hair is when you apply conditioner. Use a wide tooth comb and gently remove any knots. This also distributes your conditioner through your hair. Avoid using brushes as wet hair is more elastic than dry hair and it can stretch and break more easily when it’s wet.

Gently towel dry your hair – never rub your hair with your towel as you will instantly create frizz. Instead squeeze the water out of your hair. If you have frizz prone hair try a microfiber towel for a smoother effect.

Shine on – I give my hair a little help in the shine department by adding an oil to my hair after I wash it. The Schwarzkopf Ultimate Oil Elixir Serum is a spray and contains teeny tiny flecks of gold which gives your hair instant shine while nourishing it at the same time.

Second day hair tricks – I don’t wash my hair every day so for those in between days a little styling powder on my roots gives me some volume and another spray of the serum on my ends keeps my hair looking like new.

Feed your hair - Although hair technically isn’t living, you need to eat well to feed your hair growth. Keeping fit and eating a diet high in protein will ensure your new hair forms in optimum condition.

So what’s your daily hair routine? Head over to the Schwarzkopf Australia Facebook page to share your best hair care.

  • Essential Looks from Hair Expo 2013 plus a new hairstyle tutorial

Every June long weekend in Sydney, hairdressers from across the country and overseas come together to celebrate Hair Expo. It’s the biggest hair event in the southern hemisphere.

Now if you’ve never been to Hair Expo, it’s hard to explain what it’s like. Imagine a collision of art, fashion and hair combined with the latest trends and technology for salon professionals. It goes for three days with events and parties every night and is jam-packed with inspiration and fun.

Just about everyone there has had their hair cut in the last week so that they have fresh new hair to show off. Creative colour is everywhere! This year I noticed trends for multi-coloured peacock inspired blues and greens, plus lots of pastels and pinks.

Not one to miss out on the chance to have fun with my hair, I changed my hair colour and even had some pink sections added to my hair! Hair expo inspires lots of hairdressers to change their look so they can display their skills to their peers.

    The Schwarzkopf Gala Event

After all the excitement and education sessions, Hair Expo culminates in a final gala night and awards ceremony. Over 1200 people attended the event and boy did Schwarzkopf put on a show!

You may think a hair show will be like a fashion catwalk show, but add in live singers, dancers performers and some of the most incredible hair you’ll ever see and that will give you some idea of what to expect.

Presenting the key hair trends for the coming year, Schwarzkopf took inspiration from fashion to create the new hair looks you’ll want to wear right now.

Kicking off with Mono Mods, a nod to the 1960s fashion as seen at Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. Monochromatic checks and stripes are teamed with modern mod styles. Male models rode Vespas down the catwalk to pick up cute girls wearing shift dresses and bouffant hairstyles. These are my favourite looks and there were cuts to suit all hair lengths.

The other key trends focus on colour and cut, so if you’re finally ready to go for the chop do it now! Take these photos in for inspiration and play up the shapes in your hair with colour.

The White Angles collection is inspired by origami and Japanese design. Sleek, sharp cuts create a gold finish.

Electric Youth is fierce and irreverent. These uber cool cuts kick back to 90s rebels and showcased some fabulous pastels and coppery reds.

Glam Chic sees the return of edgy glamour, with rich, dark tonal brunettes to create delicious shiny hair.

Most of these trends focus on short cuts but if you still want to keep your hair long, try splicing in blocks of caramel into chocolate brown or pastels into pale blondes. I even spotted a faux bob in the Mono Mod collection so you can fake it if you’re not ready for the chop.

Back to my favourite trend, this easy ponytail hairstyle tutorial is a modern take on the 1960s shape as seen on the Schwarzkopf Gala catwalk.

Modern 1960s style ponytail tutorial - The Schwarzkopf Hair Expo Inspiration

    The Hair Romance Version

    1. Start with freshly washed and blowdried hair. Try the Schwarzkopf Straight & Glossy shampoo and conditioner or if you have fine hair use the Push Up Volume range. Blowdry your hair upside down if you need even more volume!

    2. Sprinkle a little Schwarzkopf Volume Powder at the crown of your head and backcomb your hair.

    3. Comb the top of your hair gently to smooth over but beep the volume at the crown. To support your bouffant, cross sections of hair from each side and pin with a bobby pin

    4. Repeat with two more small sections of hair from each side, crossing them at the back of your head and pinning in place with bobby pins. This will ensure you bouffant stays big all day.

    5. Gather all of your hair into a low ponytail and secure with a hair elastic.

    6. Take a small piece of hair from your ponytail and wrap it around your hair elastic to cover it. Pin in place underneath with a bobby pin.

    7. Finish with a spritz of Schwarzkopf Ultimate Styling Hairspray to keep it all in place. Leave a few loose pieces of hair around your face for a softer finish.

Wear this hairstyle with a geometric shift dress for work, or with stripes on the weekend for play.

So whether you’re after a total style change, or hairstyle inspiration, Schwarzkopf’s fashion inspired Essential Looks have something for everyone. Are you a Mono Mod or is Glam Chic more your style?

  • Top 7 tips to achieve your most beautiful hair

The search for Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair is on!

Schwarzkopf scouts are out on the streets looking for beautiful hair and you can nominate your own gorgeous locks to win the coveted title of Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair

Over the years I have played with many styles in my hair but I’ve come to realise that your natural hair is always the most beautiful hair for you. Take my advice to ensure your hair is always at its most beautiful.

Hair Romance’s tips to achieve your most beautiful hair

    1. Love your hair. I know it seems obvious, but once you acknowledge and understand what type of hair you’ve got, you can start looking after it properly. While you’re in denial about your real hair, it will never look its most beautiful.
    2. Choose the right products for your hair. Choose hydrating and moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (like Schwarzkopf Ultimate Oil Elixir) for dry or curly hair. Choose a volumising shampoo like Schwarzkopf Push-Up Volume for fine hair. Using the right product for your hair will give you the right results you want.
    3. Get a haircut. I believe a haircut can change your life, and it will definitely change your hair. Don’t get attached to your long hair. If the ends are ragged it will look terrible. Beautiful hair has no split ends so get them cut off.
    4. Get your shine on. Use a semi-permanent colour like Schwarzkopf Live Colour to add a gloss to your hair.
    5. Never heat style without using a protectant. Repeat this mantra and make sure you never damage your hair unnecessarily! Use a heat protectant spray like Schwarzkopf Heat Shield to keep your hair looking its best every time you blowdry or heat style your hair.
    6. Treat your hair. Once a week use a deep conditioning mask to help repair and protect your hair from damage caused by styling. Try the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Repair Mask. It only takes 60 seconds so you can always make time for your hair.
    7. Try a new hairstyle. Get out of your ponytail rut and do something different with your hair. Move your part, or try a side braid for a different look. You can do so many things with braids!

Hair should reflect your personality. Your hairstyle needs to suit your lifestyle, but your personality makes it more fun.

Who do you think has beautiful hair? Check the entries for Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair and vote for your favourite looks. You may even want to enter your hair as there are some amazing prizes on offer.

  • How to redo the Big Bob!

One of my most frequently asked questions is “where do you find ideas for your hairstyles?”

Honestly I find inspiration everywhere. I love creating shapes with hair, and thinking about new ways to wear a style.

Every season I’m inspired by the looks on the Fashion Week catwalks. They really are the creative centre for hair trends.

Sometimes the initial looks can seem unwearable but you can take elements of them to inspire your everyday styles.

Schwarzkopf have also been looking to international fashion weeks to define the key hair trends for 2013 and have put together these four amazing looks –

Clockwise from top left: Big Bob, Fringer, Gloss and Sleek Colour

I was invited to the unveiling of the Schwarzkopf Looks for 2013 at the equally stylish Eau de Vie in Darlinghurst. Grant Withnell, Technical Stylist for Schwarzkopf had spent all day recreating the cawalk looks on some seriously gorgeous models but I got the inside scoop on how to do these looks in your own hair.

Can you guess which look I was dying to try?

    The Big Bob of course!

Grant went all out on the night to create the biggest bob he could. He used 5 sets of hair extensions and 5 hair donuts to make this gravity-defying hairstyle! Though I can tell you this style is achievable in your own hair, without any extensions. With just a few product tricks you can get some fabulous volume in your hair.

Style-synonymous Schwarzkopf have honed in the key catwalk trends for their Looks for 2013 and they all translate into stunning, wearable styles.

Look 1 – Big Bob - this style is your friend if you want to try a short hair style without the worry of losing all your lovely long locks. It’s a faux bob that turns a teased ponytail up into a high-volume, high fashion bob. With retro tones this style changes with how you wear it.

Look 2. Fringer – if you’re thinking of going red there has never been a better time. The bold, blunt fringe gives a sharp finish to any shade of red from copper to deep rhubarb and it’s making me consider a colour change…

Look 3. Gloss – the deep side part with classic, side-swept Hollywood waves has been a red carpet and catwalk favourite. With a little ‘80s edge, this sleek style gives you that flawlessly elegant evening look with a perfect glossy finish.

Look 4.  Sleek Colour – fun colour is here to stay and this striking bright colour effect can be dyed or achieved with clip-in extensions. You can also achieve this style with temporary hair chalks.

How to get the look: Big Bob

    1. Separate the top section of your hair from ear to ear and clip it up out of the way.

    2. Braid the underneath section across and continue to plait all of the hair. Twist the braid around and pin into a flat bun.

Tip: If you can’t braid you can just twist your hair around into a tight bun.

    3. Unclip the top section of your hair and get your teasing comb ready! Using a fine comb or small brush, backcomb your hair. Take small sections starting at the front and work back until your hair is huge and looks crazy! You’ll need all the volume you can get to make your faux bob big!

Tip: Focus on teasing at the roots and midlengths of your hair. Schwarzkopf Instant Volume hair powder is your secret weapon to creating Big Bob. Sprinkle it on your roots and gently massage it in with your fingertips - it really does give your hair instant volume!

    4. Carefully comb the outer layer of your hair down to gently smooth the top of your hair.

    5. Gather your hair into a low ponytail using a small, clear elastic.

    6. Tuck the end of your ponytail up and into the bottom of the style so that it’s hidden, and pin it in place.

    7.  Look for any loose layers and pin in place underneath. You can leave a few pieces loose at the front if you like.

Tip: A spritz of Schwarzkopf Volume Styling Hairspray will put any flyways back in place.

It’s no secret I love big hair and this trend is a BIG favourite of mine.

I’ll be wearing Big Bob for an evening look, and maybe a slightly smaller version for day.
