Split Ends: How to Avoid Splitting Hairs

Unless you have cut your hair short, you are probably familiar with the problem of frizzy looking dry split ends. Our tips help you get rid of the problem

How to avoid split ends

Healthy and shiny hair, no split ends – Proper care works!

Several conditions may be responsible for split ends: dry hair, aggressive shampoos, blow-drying the hair at hot temperatures or too much stress due to chemical treatments. The ends of the hair are especially vulnerable to mistreatment. Hair with split ends looks old in every sense of the word. The hair looks old because it is old. Shoulder-long hair is about three years old.

Using the Delicate Cycle to Fix the Problem of Split Ends

Shampoos for stressed hair, rinses and hair treatments provide hair with ample nutrients. This keeps split ends in line at least until the next shampoo.
A special shampoo for hair with split ends will help if split ends are the only problem. Mix the shampoo with an equal amount of water before applying it only to the base of the dry hair. Use a small amount of water to work up some lather and then rinse. The shampoo in the rinse will sufficiently clean the ends of the hair.

Coating Split Ends

Special treatments for split ends contain silicon oil, which will cover split ends with a filmy coating. This temporarily repairs split ends. As a result, hair looks healthier and not quite so shaggy. Please note that you should not use the split end treatment after every shampoo. Treating your hair every three shampoos works better. The silicon coating can survive quite a few shampoos. Adding more silicon may weigh your hair down or gum it up. You should also work only one or two drops of the split end treatment into the dry hair ends. A little split end fluid goes a long way.

Trim Your Hair to Combat Split Ends

First, the good news: Thanks to the good products on the market, fewer and fewer people have hair with split ends. If you have to deal with split ends despite the new products a visit to the hair stylist will help against the frizzies in the long run. Hair care specialists can apply a special technique, which hides the split ends under covering hair. Trimming the ends of the hair by about one centimetre (4/10 of an inch) is a good idea. Your hair will still grow if you trim your hair this way only every eight to ten weeks because hair grows about 1 to 1.5 cm per month. As a benefit of trimming your hair regularly you will have fuller and most of all healthier hair.

Tools to End Split Ends

You definitely need high-quality tools if you have to deal with split ends on a regular basis. Do not even consider using cheap combs with burrs or brushes with metal bristles. Instead, use brushes with natural (boar) bristles and combs made of real horn or wood. They work very well. Steer clear also from teasing combs or teasing brushes, which are especially rough on your hair.
